. MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Toledo suffered an 85-47 setback at Central Michigan on Saturday in McGuirk Arena. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 15-10 overall, 6-7 in the Mid-American Conference.
Senior led UT with 14 points, followed closely by redshirt freshman Tanaya Beacham and junior with 12 points each. The Rockets struggled to put the ball in the basket against the MAC West Division leading Chippewas (20-3, 12-0 MAC), connecting on 29.6 percent (21-of-71) from the field, including 16.7 percent (4-of-24) from three-point land, and 50.0 percent (1-of-2) from the charity stripe. Tinara Moore paced a balanced CMU attack with a game-high 22 points, while Cassie Breen, Presley Hudson, Micaela Kelly and Kyra Bussell contributed 14, 13, 10 and 10, respectively. The MAC's top-scoring offense lived up to its billing, shooting 54.7 percent (35-of-64) from the floor, including 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from beyond the arc. CMU did a majority of its damage on the interior and finished with a 48-22 advantage in points in the paint. The Chippewas set the tone early and shot almost 60 percent from the field in the first period to claim a 24-8 lead. Breen and Moore spearheaded the quick start with eight and seven points, respectively, to help the home team assume a quick 16-point advantage.
The Rockets benefited from eight points by Beacham in the second period to make the difference 45-20 at the intermission. The Youngstown, Ohio native knocked down 4-of-5 shots from the field and recorded a blocked shot to share top scoring honors with Bravo-Harriott in the first half. UT played much better in the third period and was outscored by one point, 20-19. The 2017 MAC Champions utilized six points each from junior and McIntyre to set the score at 65-39 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Unfortunately for the Rockets, they were unable to maintain that showing in the fourth quarter, as CMU's Kelly tallied seven-straight points early on to put the game out of reach. The Rockets will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 17 when they host MAC West Division rival Western Michigan. Game time versus the Broncos is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. In Savage Arena and will be streamed live on ESPN3.
UT and WMU will meet for the second time this year and 78th time overall. The Rockets claimed a 78-73 road victory against the Broncos on Jan. 31 in Alumni Arena. Toledo leads the all-time series, 56-21, and has won the last eight contests against its division rival. UT also holds a 28-8 advantage in games played in Savage Arena after claiming a 75-67 home triumph last year. In conjunction with next Saturday's game, Toledo will hold its 12th-annual 'Rockets for the Cure' day. The MAC West Division showdown will help benefit the Susan G.
Komen for the Cure of Northwest Ohio, the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center and the University of Toledo Center for Health and Successful Living. The Rockets encourage everyone in attendance to wear pink in support of cancer research. The goal of 'Rockets for the Cure' is to provide cancer education to the community, provide encouragement to the survivors fighting now and their families, celebrate the survivors that have won the fight and remember the ones that were less fortunate.
